Ah, Pope St. Pius X. \u00a0I picked this card up a few years ago. \u00a0He’s served me well as a bookmark, particularly when reading about Catholic tradition and the Traditional Latin Mass (for obvious reasons?). \u00a0My uncle (Fr. Chris!) received a relic of Pius shortly after\/for his ordination to the priesthood a few years ago from some friends in Boston. \u00a0Fun fact, both he and I share Pius X’s feast day, his in the new calendar (Novus Ordo) and me in the old (1962)! \u00a0I’ve always thought that really neat.<\/p>\n

As we all probably know, this saintly pope’s motto was\u00a0Instaurare Omnia in Christo<\/em> (“to restore all things in Christ”), something desperately needed now as much as it was in his time. \u00a0One interesting fact about Pius is that his hometown, Riese, in northern Italy, actually appended “Pio X” to the town’s name to commemorate the town’s favorite son.<\/p>\n

Pope St. Pius X also has a lovely chapel in the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception. \u00a0Some photos are included below, which I was able to take in early February. \u00a0Another interesting tidbit, Pope Pius X supported the building of the Shrine, and contributed an equivalent of $400 to its construction. \u00a0I liked how his altar also has four images<\/a> of major accomplishments he made: the top left commemorates his lowering of the Communion age, the upper right is a ship on a stormy sea guided by the Holy Spirit, which represents his struggle against Modernism (!), the lower left is the image of the Confraternity of Christian Doctrine, which was to be established in every parish, and finally the bottom right shows the Code of Canon Law, which he codified and reformed in 1904.<\/p>\n
