As I continue to read through Fr Lacordaire’s, OP Letters to Young Men,<\/em>\u00a0I came across this letter on the Dignity of a Christian.<\/p>\n

I found Lacordaire is surprisingly upfront in this letter – he does not pull any punches. \u00a0“In any case you can no longer live a coward’s or a sluggard’s life.” \u00a0Note, here, he does not say “If you no longer want to live” – there is no choice here. \u00a0If one knows the truth (and in particular, the Truth), one has the obligation and duty<\/strong>\u00a0to follow through on that, to take up one’s cross and save our souls in the way God commands it. \u00a0We mustn’t be shy or lazy about our duties in our states of life!<\/p>\n

But\u00a0<\/strong>our duties and obligations don’t stop there. \u00a0We aren’t called to hide our lights under a bushel, to hunker down and forget the world. \u00a0No, we must each do our share towards the salvation of the world and to the restoration of the Church (how especially true is that in our modern and post-conciliar times)!<\/p>\n

We must all persevere and do our duty to save our souls, but also must not forget that no man is an island, and we have duties towards the Church and our fellow man, as well.<\/p>\n

XIV. The\u00a0Dignity of a Christian<\/strong>
\nNancy, January 20, 1843.
\nTHANK\u00a0you, my dear friend, for your kind remembrance of\u00a0me, and for all the good things\u00a0you tell me. I am very glad to see that you\u00a0have taken so\u00a0kindly to study and reflection;\u00a0God has\u00a0given you so much, you must become\u00a0a profitable servant in His hands. If He really\u00a0calls\u00a0you to a harder and more perfect life than that of the world, He will make it clear to you;\u00a0you have only to ask Him earnestly, and take\u00a0care never to do\u00a0anything which might deprive\u00a0you of His light or weaken it.<\/p>\n

In\u00a0any case you can no longer live a coward’s\u00a0or a sluggard’s life, with just enough faith to be\u00a0afraid of\u00a0losing your soul ; in these days faith\u00a0cannot exist without\u00a0appreciation of the high\u00a0dignity of a Christian and of his noble mission.\u00a0We must each of us be\u00a0willing to do our share\u00a0towards the salvation of the world, towards the\u00a0restoration of the Church in our own\u00a0country,\u00a0and to the salvation of this much harrassed [sic]<\/em> land,\u00a0which seems to be on the\u00a0way to recover the\u00a0place of its election.<\/p>\n

I am\u00a0very happy here, my dear friend. I\u00a0have been\u00a0very kindly received, and people come\u00a0to listen to God s word. We are\u00a0doing a little\u00a0good ; pray that it may spread and thrive.\u00a0Good-bye, my dear friend; may God keep you.\u00a0Let me\u00a0always have a share in your affection.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n
