As someone who still struggles to decorate his apartment as something that is more a welcoming home and less a Trappist cell, this quote spoke to me in a unique way.
“Homes are not beautiful if they are empty. Things are beautiful by the presence of God.”
It’s apparently from St. Thomas Aquinas, who I hope needs no further comment. I just stumbled across it reading Br. Jordan Zajac, OP’s blog post over at Dominicana blog.
It’s a good line to keep in mind. We can fill and decorate our homes, and ourselves, with the finest artwork, the finest china, and the best technology, but if it is Godless, it will be barren and useless to us, at least in the things that matter most.
